The 1960s

The 1960s, called the Swinging Sixties or the Age of Aquarius, is a decade in the 20th century, including the years from 1960 to 1969. It follows the 1950s and comes before the 1970s. As a period of history, it is considered part of modern times.

February: Justice League of America founded by Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash (Barry Allen), Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter--Happy Harbor, Rhode Island.

February 1: Black students at the Woolworth’s in Greensboro, North Carolina, sit down at the whites-only lunch counter and insist on being served.

May 1: Gary Powers shot down in a U-2 spy plane over the Soviet Union.

May 11: Adolf Eichmann captured by Mossad agents--Buenos Aires.

August: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stu Sutcliffe and Pete Best name their band The Beatles and start a series of gigs in Hamburg, Germany.

September 26: John Kennedy debates Richard Nixon--Chicago.

October: Don Draper becomes a partner at the Sterling Cooper ad agency--Manhattan.

November 8: John F. Kennedy elected President of the United States--with the help of Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley.

December 25: Nazi scientists produce the first of 94 Hitler clones--Brazil.

1961[]

January 20: President Kennedy tells you to ask what you can do for your country--Washington, D.C.

April 12: Yuri Gagarin launched into space.

April 17: CIA-backed invasion fails to overthrow Castro--Bay of Pigs, Cuba.

James Bond encounters Ernst Blofeld of SPECTRE.

Noam Chomsky becomes a professor at MIT.

August 4: Barack Hussein Obama born in Kenya, though his parents forge birth certificates and plant a birth announcement in the Honolulu newspaper, making it appear that he was born in Hawaii.

August 13: Berlin Wall constructed.

November: Reed Richards’ experimental space flight turns himself, Ben Grimm, and siblings Sue and Johnny Storm into the Fantastic Four.

January 1: James Bond is married, but his bride is gunned down by Ernst Blofeld and Irma Bunt on their wedding day--Germany.

May: Gamma Bomb accident turns scientist Bruce Banner into The Hulk--New Mexico.

May: The Corny Collins Show is racially integrated--Baltimore.

May 19: Marilyn Monroe sings "Happy Birthday Mr. President" to JFK at Madison Square Garden--New York City.

August 5: Nelson Mandela (b. 1918) imprisoned by South Africa with help of CIA--Rivonia, South Africa.

August 5: Marilyn Monroe found dead of a barbiturate overdose in her home in Brentwood, Los Angeles.

August: Student Peter Parker (b. 1947), bitten by a radioactive spider, begins fighting crime--New York City.

August: The god Thor reappears on Earth after a long absence--Norway.

August: The giant gorilla Kong battles Godzilla--Tokyo.

October 14: Cuban Missile Crisis brings the United States and Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear war.

November: Dean Vernon Wormer puts Bluto Blutarsky and the rest of Delta Tau Chi, aka Animal House, on double secret probation--Faber College, Tennessee.

Giant caterpillar attacks Tokyo, later transforms into Mothra.

1963[]

Leroy "Encyclopedia" Brown (age 10) opens a detective agency in Idaville, Florida.

March: Tony Stark develops the Iron Man armor while a prisoner in Viet Nam.

April: James Bond, with the help of Tiger Tanaka and Kissy Suzuki, tracks down and kills Ernst Blofeld--Japan

Strange attacks by birds--Bodega Bay, California

Gloria Steinem works undercover as a Playboy bunny.

Inspector Clouseau recovers the Pink Panther diamond.

Dr. Steven Strange begins a career as a mystic after an accident ends his medical career.

August 28: Martin Luther King declares he has a dream at the March on Washington

September: The Avengers founded by Iron Man, Thor and The Hulk.

In the same month, Professor Charles Xaxier opens his School for Gifted Youngsters in Salem Center, N.Y., secretly a haven for teenagers with mutant superabilities. His students confront the superpowered mutant known as Magneto for the first time.

October 31: Michael Meyers kills his sister and is committed to a mental institution.

November 22: Assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas. Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunmen, part of a conspiracy or an innocent patsy. Lyndon Johnson becomes president.

Double agent Kim Philby defects to Moscow.

1964[]

February: James Bond kills Francisco Scaramanga, The Man with the Golden Gun. He retires not long afterward.

February 1: Contest winners Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, Mike Teevee and Charlie Bucket are given a tour of Willie Wonka’s chocolate factory--the first outsiders allowed to enter in ten years.

February 9: The Beatles appear on The Ed Sullivan Show.

March: Captain America unfrozen from iceberg.

March 13: Kitty Genovese is murdered as 38 witnesses fail to call the police--Queens, New York

Doctor Strangelove (almost) causes the end of the world.

August 2-4: Gulf of Tonkin incident

September 26: Seven sea-goers are marooned on Gilligan's Island, not rescued until 1977.

December 20: Ghidorah, the three-headed space dragon, invades the Earth after destroying the civilization on Venus, and is repelled by the combined efforts of Gojira, Mothra and Rodan.

Gamera the giant turtle first appears over Japan.

Ralph Nader exposes the auto industry as unsafe at any speed.

British intelligence agent John Steed recruits Mrs. Emma Peal as his Avenging partner.

February 21: Malcolm X (b. 1925) assassinated in New York City.

July 25: Bob Dylan goes electric at the Newport Folk Festival.

August 11: Watts Riots

November 27: Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters hold the first Acid Test--Santa Cruz, California.

1966[]

Andy Dufresne escapes from Shawshank State Prison--Maine.

March 4: John Lennon points out that The Beatles are more popular than Jesus--Weybridge, England

May 16: Mao and the Gang of Four launch the Cultural Revolution.

June 3: Billie Joe McAllister jumps off the Tallahatchie Bridge--Money, Mississippi

June 6: Birth of Damien Thorn, potential Antichrist, in Rome. Another contender is born about the same time to Rosemary Woodhouse in New York City.

July: International Society for Krishna Consciousness is founded--New York City

November 9: Paul McCartney blows his mind out in a car--and is replaced by a look-alike--London.

1967[]

January 14: Timothy Leary tells a Be-In in Golden Gate Park to tune in, turn on, drop out.

April 17: Resurrection of the vampire Barnabas Collins--Collinsport, Maine.

Billy Pilgrim is abducted by aliens, taken to Tralfamadore.

June 1: Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band is released, kicking off the Summer of Love.

June: Benjamin Braddock, spurning a career in plastics, begins an affair with Mrs. Robinson.

June 5-10: In the Six-Day War, Israel occupies territories held by Egypt, Syria and Jordan.

September 7: First reported cattle mutilation, in Alamosa, Colorado.

October 9: Guerrilla leader Che Guevara (b. 1928) captured and killed by the CIA in Bolivia.

October 20: Bigfoot captured on film--Crescent City, California.

October 21: Attempt to levitate the Pentagon

October 26: John McCain shot down over North Vietnam, imprisoned in the Hanoi Hilton.

February 28: Swift Boat commander John Kerry earns a Bronze Star in a firefight in Vietnam, thereby dooming his future presidential bid.

January 20: Henry Kissinger becomes National Security Advisor to Richard Nixon.

July 3: Brian Jones found floating in his pool.

July 15: Agent Kay time travels from 2008 to prevent an alien fugitive from killing a 29-year-old Agent Jay.

July 16: Apollo 11 launches from Cape Kennedy.

July 20: Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the Moon.

August 8: Charles Manson (b. 1934) directs his Family to murder Sharon Tate and others in order to bring about Helter Skelter.

August 15-18: Woodstock

September 13: Mystery Inc.--Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, Norville “Shaggy” Rogers and their Great Dane Scooby-Doo--begin investigating apparent supernatural manifestations in their Mystery Machine.

December 6: Hell’s Angels serving as bouncers at a Rolling Stones concert at Altamont, Calif., kill one of the spectators.
