Achilles, king of Aegina and leader of the Myrmidon ant-men, is the greatest warrior of his generation and serves as the champion of Greece during the Trojan War. Invulnerable to being killed except on his heel due to being dipped in the River Styx by his mother, the sea nymph Thetis, he is also known for his unsurpassed speed.
In a futile effort to protect him from prophecies of a short and glorious life, he is raised disguised as a girl on the island of Skyros, along with his closest comrade and lover Patroclus. The ruse revealed, he is taken to Troy, where he leads the Greeks in battle until King Agamemnon of Mycenae steals from him the slave girl Briseis, whereupon Achilles sulks in his tent and refuses to fight. Only after Patroclus fights disguised in Achilles' armor and is killed by Prince Hector of Troy does Achilles return to the battle, slaying Hector and in turn being killed by an arrow shot into his heel by Paris.
Achilles' son is Neoptolemus.
