King Arthur Pendragon
"The once and future king."
Arthur Pendragon is a legendary king of Britain during the Dark Ages, born at Tintagel to King Uther Pendragon and Ygraine, duchess of Cornwall. His birth was orchestrated by Uther with the help of the wizard Merlin, who used magic to make Ygraine believe Uther was her husband. To protect him from potential threats, Arthur was raised in obscurity by Sir Ector, though he was secretly tutored by Merlin, who guided him in both wisdom and leadership.
Arthur’s rise to the throne comes after he retrieves the Sword in the Stone, a magical test that proves his right to rule. With the sword, he gains the recognition and legitimacy to become king, subduing his rivals like King Lot and King Urien to usher in a reign of peace and justice.
Excalibur, Arthur’s legendary sword, is given to him by the Lady of the Lake, imbuing him with the power to defend his realm. In his grand hall at Camelot, Arthur establishes the Knights of the Round Table, a fellowship of the realm’s bravest and most loyal warriors, who pledge to protect Britain and uphold the ideals of chivalry. The Knights later embark on the quest for the Holy Grail, seeking the sacred object that will grant eternal salvation.
Despite his greatness, Arthur’s life is marked by betrayal. His wife, Queen Guenevere, has a secret affair with Sir Lancelot, his bravest knight and closest confidant, which fractures the once-unified kingdom.
In the final battle at Camlann, Arthur is mortally wounded by his out-of-wedlock son, Mordred, who has rebelled against him. Fatally injured, Arthur is taken by the Lady of the Lake to the mystical Isle of Avalon, where he is said to lie in rest, awaiting the time when Britain’s greatest need will call him back to life and to battle.
