Kal El

Kal-El, in his Superman identity

Clark Kent, born Kal-El, is a journalist based in Metropolis, Delaware, who is secretly the superhero Superman, known as the Man of Steel. A Kryptonian--an alien from the planet Krypton--he survived that planet's destruction when his father Jor-El sent him in a rocket to Earth. He landed near Smallville, Kansas, where he was raised as a human by Martha and Jonathan Kent, who taught him to conceal his origin and powers.

Those powers--which manifest under Earth's yellow Sun--include super strength, invulnerability, flight, heat vision and heightened senses. As a Kryptonian, Kent is vulnerable to kryptonite; he can also be defeated by magic.

As a teenager, he began using his superpowers to right wrongs as Superboy--who traveled into the 30th century to join the Legion of Superheroes. As an adult, he moved to Metropolis and became a reporter with the Daily Planet--working alongside Lois Lane, who would become attracted to Superman (but not Kent). Other colleagues there include editor Perry White and copy kid (later reporter) Jimmy Olsen.

Superman's enemies include Lex Luthor, Braniac, Mister Mxyzptlk and General Zod, another survivor of Krypton. Kara Zor-El, Kal-El's cousin, also escaped Krypton's destruction and fights evil on Earth as Supergirl. Superman has a sometimes contentious friendship with Batman.

When not living in human disguise in Metropolis, Superman has a secret headquarters in the Arctic regions of Canada called the Fortress of Solitude.
