James T. "Jim" West is a special agent for the Secret Service in the 1870s in the Wild West, reporting directly to President Ulysses S. Grant. His partner and best friend is Artemus Gordon. His arch-nemesis is Dr. Miguelito Loveless.
West is a graduate of West Point who fights for the Union during the War Between the States. He is recruited into the Secret Service, perhaps as early as 1865 when the agency is founded. By 1871 he is working regularly with Gordon.
He is a master of hand-to-hand combat and a crack shot with firearms. He is exceptionally charismatic, particularly with attractive women. He uses a variety of gadgets, some of them remarkably advanced for his era. He travels the West in a specially equipped train called the Wanderer.
By 1885, he is (mostly) retired and living in Mexico.
