The Doctor is an alien and a time traveler, a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. His space/time vehicle, known as the TARDIS, is stuck in the form of a British police box.
As a Time Lord, The Doctor is able to regenerate after death, reappearing with a different physical form and a somewhat altered personality. He has done this at least 12 times.
